India unveiled the UPI-UPU Integration project at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai, marking a significant step towards transforming global remittances and increasing financial inclusion. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, launched the program, describing it as a step towards making cross-border transactions faster, more secure, and affordable.

The project was created through a partnership between the Department of Posts, NPCI International Payments Limited, and the Universal Postal Union. It connects India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to the UPU Interconnection Platform, integrating the reach of postal networks with UPI’s real-time payment capabilities.

Scindia stated that the program would enable families globally to send and receive money immediately at a cheaper cost, reaffirming the postal sector’s role as a trusted community service provider. India has also given USD 10 million to support innovation, digital payments, and capacity building within the UPU framework.

Scindia highlighted India’s achievements, stating that over 560 million bank accounts had been opened under the Aadhaar and Jan Dhan initiatives, and that India Post had delivered 900 million letters and parcels the previous year.

UPI processed approximately 185 billion transactions worth USD 2.83 trillion in 2024-25, accounting for over half of all worldwide digital payments.
