Semiconductor Revolution: Modi Says ‘Digital Diamonds’ to Shape India’s Future
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India will secure a major role in the global semiconductor industry, which is expected to exceed one trillion dollars in the coming years. Addressing the third edition of ‘Semicon India 2025’, he announced that 10 semiconductor projects totalling more than eighteen billion dollars, or more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore, are now underway across the country.
The Prime Minister remarked that the global semiconductor market has already crossed $600 billion, and India’s growing presence would ensure that it secures a large piece of this expanding sector. During the event, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw handed PM Modi the first test chips from four sanctioned projects, including the Vikram chip, India’s first 32-bit microprocessor developed indigenously by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory.
PM Modi referred to semiconductors as the “digital diamonds” of the twenty-first century, emphasising their role in global economic growth. He also emphasised the government’s attempts to reduce red tape through the National Single Window System, which provides for faster clearances for investors by merging approvals from the Centre and State.
The Prime Minister highlighted new design centres in Noida and Bengaluru, saying India is developing powerful semiconductors that can enable next-generation technologies.
