Riyadh–Doha High-Speed Rail Network to Cut Travel Time to Two Hours
The Saudi Arabia–Qatar High Speed Rail project is set to revolutionise passenger rail connectivity across the Gulf region, following the Saudi Council of Ministers’ approval of an agreement to build an electric bullet train linking the two countries. The ambitious project aims to significantly cut travel time, boost economic integration, and strengthen mobility between the neighbouring nations.
The high-speed rail network will connect the capitals Riyadh and Doha, covering a distance of about 785 km in just two hours. Trains are expected to operate at speeds exceeding 300 kmph. The route will pass through key regions such as Al-Hofuf, Dammam, and Al-Ahsa, and will link Hamad International Airport with King Salman International Airport, improving air-rail integration and passenger convenience.
According to Qatar’s Ministry of Transport, the project is expected to serve over 10 million passengers annually and generate more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs. It is also projected to contribute around 115 billion riyals to the combined GDP of both countries, making it one of the most strategic infrastructure initiatives in the GCC.
The high-speed electric rail project is estimated to take around six years to complete and is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing business, tourism, regional connectivity, and overall quality of life across the Gulf.
