ISRO begins high-altitude astronaut endurance trials in the Ladakh region
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched a specialized mission in Ladakh to test astronauts’ mental and physical endurance in extreme conditions. The initiative is part of preparations for India’s upcoming human spaceflight programme, particularly the Gaganyaan mission.
Ladakh’s high-altitude terrain, low oxygen levels, and harsh climatic conditions make it an ideal location for simulating the physiological and psychological challenges astronauts may face during space missions. Selected candidates are undergoing rigorous assessments, including survival training, stress management, and adaptability exercises.
The mission also focuses on studying how the human body reacts to prolonged exposure to extreme environments, which is critical for ensuring astronaut safety during long-duration spaceflights. Experts are closely monitoring vital parameters such as oxygen saturation, heart rate, and cognitive performance.
This initiative reflects ISRO’s growing emphasis on human space exploration and its commitment to building a robust astronaut training ecosystem within India. The findings from these tests are expected to play a crucial role in refining training protocols and mission planning for future crewed missions, marking a significant step forward in India’s space ambitions.
