India-Malaysia Relations Set to Deepen, PM Modi Reiterates Zero Tolerance on Terrorism
India and Malaysia on Sunday, February 8th, 2026, vowed to significantly expand cooperation across key sectors, including trade and investment, defence, energy, advanced manufacturing, and semiconductors, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held wide-ranging talks in Kuala Lumpur. The two sides signed 11 agreements to strengthen bilateral engagement, notably a framework pact to deepen collaboration in the semiconductor sector.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s firm stance on terrorism, stating that there would be “no double standards, no compromise”, while both leaders strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and pledged zero tolerance towards cross-border terrorism, radicalisation, and terror financing. They also agreed to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security.
Both leaders welcomed efforts to promote the use of local currencies, the Indian Rupee and Malaysian Ringgit, for bilateral trade, calling it a major step towards economic integration. Modi described the relationship as “special”, highlighting the historic and cultural ties between the two maritime neighbours, and announced the establishment of a new Indian Consulate General in Malaysia.
Malaysia extended support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council, while both sides backed reforms of global institutions and reaffirmed ASEAN’s central role in the Indo-Pacific. The visit also saw Modi interact with Indian-origin political leaders and top Malaysian industry executives to boost business and investment ties.
