Minnesota cross-country skier Sydney Peterson claimed her first individual Paralympic gold medal on Wednesday, winning the women’s 10-kilometer classic standing race at the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games in Italy. Competing at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium in Val di Fiemme, Peterson finished 2.7 seconds ahead of Norway’s Vilde Nilsen, while Canada’s Brittany Hudak took bronze more than two minutes behind.

The victory marked Peterson’s second medal at the Games after winning silver in the women’s sprint classic standing race a day earlier. The 24-year-old has now added to an already impressive Paralympic record that includes bronze, silver, and relay gold medals from the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing.

Peterson said the gold medal was particularly meaningful after years of finishing just off the top spot. She noted that staying healthy this season allowed her to compete at her best and finally secure an individual victory.

Originally from Lake Elmo, Minnesota, Peterson was a multi-sport athlete in high school and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Utah. She began experiencing symptoms of reflex sympathetic dystrophy and dystonia at age 13, neurological conditions that cause chronic pain and involuntary muscle contractions and affect mobility in her left arm and leg.
