PM Modi Congratulates Balen Shah, Reaffirms Commitment To Deepen India–Nepal Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, 9th March, 2026,  congratulated Rabi Lamichhane and Balendra Shah, leaders of Nepal’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), on their electoral victory and the formation of a new government in Nepal.

During a phone conversation, the Prime Minister conveyed India’s readiness to work closely with the incoming leadership to strengthen bilateral ties and promote mutual prosperity and development.

In a post on X, Modi congratulated both leaders on their individual electoral victories as well as the RSP’s strong performance in the elections. He also extended his best wishes for the formation of the new government and reiterated India’s commitment to cooperation aimed at the progress and well-being of the people of both nations.

Nepal’s House of Representatives consists of 275 members. Of these, 165 members are elected through the First Past The Post (FPTP) system, while the remaining 110 seats are allocated through proportional representation.

Results have so far been declared for 161 of the 165 directly elected seats, with the remaining four expected soon. Under the proportional representation system, the RSP secured over 4.04 million votes, significantly ahead of other parties. Political observers estimate that the party could secure around 164 seats in total, comfortably surpassing the 138 seats required for a simple majority.
