Ethiopia Confers Top National Award on PM Modi for Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first bilateral visit to Ethiopia. The award was handed out in a special event at the Addis International Convention Centre, recognising Prime Minister Modi’s important contribution to strengthening India-Ethiopia relations as well as his status as a globally respected leader.

Prime Minister Modi accepted the accolade, describing it as a privilege to be recognised by one of the world’s oldest civilisations. He described the gesture as reflecting the warmth and depth of the two countries’ long-standing relationship. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Ethiopian people, praising the Ethiopian leader’s efforts to promote national unity, sustainability, and inclusive growth.

Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of education and knowledge in nation-building, recalling Indian teachers’ contributions to Ethiopia’s growth over the last century. He dedicated the honour to the people of both countries, who have worked tirelessly to strengthen bilateral relations over generations. The honour was also dedicated to India’s 1.4 billion citizens. The conferment is regarded as an important milestone, enhancing India-Ethiopia collaboration and advancing Global South agendas.
