Piyush Goyal Highlights Trade Gains as India-Australia Pact Marks Third Anniversary

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India's trade partnership with Australia continues to anchor economic engagement in the Indo-Pacific as broader CECA discussions progress.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India’s trade partnership with Australia continues to anchor economic engagement in the Indo-Pacific as broader CECA discussions progress. From January 1, 2026, Indian exports would be duty-free across all Australian tariff lines, opening up new opportunities for exporters and labour-intensive sectors.

On the third anniversary of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, Goyal stated that the agreement had progressed beyond its intent to provide specific economic outcomes.

India’s exports to Australia increased by 8% in FY 2024-25, contributing to a more favorable trade balance. Manufacturing, chemicals, textiles, pharmaceuticals, petroleum products, and gems and jewellery all saw significant improvements. Fruits, vegetables, marine products, spices, and coffee all contributed to a strong rise in agricultural exports. Gems and jewellery exports increased by 16% between April and November 2025.

The minister emphasised the Mutual Recognition Arrangement for Organic Products, which will streamline procedures and lower compliance costs for exporters. He also cited the recently concluded free trade agreement with New Zealand, which eliminates tariffs on all Indian exports and involves a long-term investment commitment. Meanwhile, India’s overall exports of goods and services hit a record $418.91 billion during April to September 2025, reflecting sustained export momentum.
