The ‘New Strategic EU-India Agenda’ has been formally approved by the European Council, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to deepening its political, economic, and strategic engagement with India. The decision, issued in Brussels, follows the European Commission’s previous communication detailing the new framework for cooperation.

The Council praised the agenda’s “strong impetus” for EU-India relations and emphasised the joint ambition of reaching a full Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of the year. It described the proposed pact as “balanced, ambitious, and mutually beneficial,” with the goal of improving market access, eliminating trade barriers, and ensuring sustainable development.

The 27-member bloc emphasised the need for collaboration in crucial areas such as technology, innovation, sustainability, security, and global connection. It asked the European Commission to continue implementing the agenda in accordance with the priorities established in the joint framework.

acknowledging India’s growing geopolitical significance, the Council emphasised the need for more engagement on defence and security issues, especially in light of global problems. It reiterated that both parties share responsibility for defending democratic ideals, multilateralism, and a rules-based international order.

The clearance comes after the European Commissioners’ historic visit to India in February, which opened a new chapter in EU-India strategic cooperation.
