Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New Delhi, emphasising that her visit would breathe new life into India-Canada relations. PM Modi stated that the visit would help strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, technology, agriculture, and people-to-people exchange. He recalled his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in June, when the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties and forming a forward-looking partnership.

The meeting is viewed as a significant step towards restoring normalcy in diplomatic relations, which were strained two years ago following false allegations by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linking India to the assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar—claims strongly denied by New Delhi. Both countries have now agreed on a plan to relaunch trade and investment talks, as well as the Canada-India CEO Forum, to look into prospects in clean technology, infrastructure, digital innovation, and agriculture.

The joint statement highlighted the need for a balanced and resilient alliance in the face of global uncertainties, with bilateral trade projected to reach $23.66 billion by 2024.
