Piyush Goyal, Maninder Sidhu Discuss Expanding India–Canada Economic Partnership

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, to discuss ways to strengthen economic and trade ties between the two countries. The meeting aimed to create mutually beneficial possibilities for firms to leverage the strengths of both economies.
Goyal added that the dialogue focused on increasing trade and investment based on mutual trust, respect, and balance. In his post on X, Sidhu stated that both sides are looking for new potential in clean technology, artificial intelligence, agriculture, and vital minerals, as well as improving connectivity and economic engagement.
The discussions come as India and Canada work to re-establish economic ties after Ottawa paused free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations in 2023. Discussions on the planned Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA), which began in March 2022, have already gone through several rounds of deliberations.
Despite diplomatic difficulties in 2023 following former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations linking India to the demise of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India denied, economic exchanges have continued to flourish. India’s exports to Canada increased 9.8% to USD 4.22 billion in 2024-25, while imports totalled USD 4.44 billion.
