The Nepal government has approved a land swap agreement with the Indian Railway Development Corporation Limited (IRDC) to facilitate the construction of the Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line. The decision, announced during a cabinet meeting, is an important step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation between Nepal and India.

Government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel announced that the cabinet has approved the exchange of 409.53 square meters of land owned by the Consulate General of Nepal in Kolkata for 526.34 square meters of land owned by IRDC.

According to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both plots are adjacent, and the exchange will allow the Indian side to continue work on the metro alignment that runs through the consulate’s property. According to a senior official, the agreement benefits both parties by providing Nepal with a larger parcel of land and a new building to replace the existing structure.

The Indian authorities had sought a resolution for several years to ensure the seamless building of the 450-metre metro ramp near the consulate. The Joka-Esplanade Purple Line is expected to boost urban mobility and connect southern and central Kolkata.
