Mumbai Welcomes Its Second International Airport as PM Unveils NMIA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), a significant addition to India’s aviation infrastructure. The Prime Minister announced that Mumbai’s long wait for a second international airport has come to an end, describing NMIA as a project that reflects India’s goal for development. The airport, designed to resemble a lotus flower, represents India’s cultural identity as well as technological progress.
He emphasised that the NMIA would benefit Maharashtra’s economy by connecting farmers and small businesses directly to global markets, lowering logistics costs, and attracting new investment. The Prime Minister examined the airport’s facilities along with Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, and Adani Group Director Jeet Adani.
NMIA, a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings Limited and CIDCO, will serve as a complement to the current Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The airport’s initial capacity of 20 million passengers per year will be increased to 90 million in future phases.
The NMIA, which is strategically connected to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, the metro, train, and road networks, is projected to transform regional connectivity.
