ICEA Reports 39% Surge in Smartphone Exports in August

India’s smartphone sector continues to grow, with the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) reporting a 39% increase in smartphone exports in August 2025 over the same month last year. Exports increased from USD 1.09 billion in August 2024 to $1.53 billion in August 2025.
Exports to the United States, India’s largest market, had particularly strong growth. Shipments more than doubled in August, increasing 148% from USD 388 million last year to USD 965 million. Exports to the United States reached USD 8.43 billion for April-August 2025, accounting for approximately 80% of the full-year total of USD 10.56 billion achieved in fiscal year 2025.
Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the ICEA, rejected concerns about monthly decreases, stating that August and September are frequently characterised by transitory slowdowns owing to new product launches, machinery retrofitting, and production adjustments ahead of the festive season. He also stated that comparing month-to-month data without context can lead to misleading conclusions.
The association also emphasised the sector’s long-term success under the government’s PLI policy, which transformed smartphones into India’s largest export.
GTRI reported a 58% drop in US exports between May and August, but ICEA stated that such fluctuations are seasonal, with global demand typically rising during festivals.
