Bihar is making significant strides towards energy self-sufficiency under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, with solar power at the forefront of its development plan. The state, which formerly struggled with electricity shortages, is now emerging as a leader in renewable energy and sustainable growth.

The government’s landmark achievement is the commissioning of India’s largest battery-based solar power facility in Kajra, Lakhisarai district. The project, built at ₹1,810.34 crore, has a solar capacity of 301 MW and a battery storage facility of 495 MWh. The project, which was built ahead of schedule in two phases, stores surplus solar energy generated during the day and supplies electricity at night, assuring constant power even in remote places.

Nitish Kumar’s administration has also implemented free power for up to 125 units per month for domestic consumers, lowering household costs and increasing access to renewable energy. The government would cover the cost of solar plant installation for low-income families, allowing them to save money on electricity and have reliable irrigation power.

This initiative provides an opportunity for young people to learn about solar installation and maintenance while also assisting small companies in avoiding power outages.
